From the critically acclaimed author of The Memory Cathedral comes perhaps the most powerful, haunting, and unforgettable novel of the Civil War - or any war - ever written. Provocative, poetic, and disturbing, it introduces us to a young narrator, Mundy McDowell, whose voice rivals any in literature, bringing poignantly to life the surreal horrors of battle and its spiritual cost to human survival.I was scarce twelve the day the damn Yankees invaded the valley. I seen a lot that day I ain´t never gonna forget. Men blown apart, screamin´ and dyin´ all around me. I was wandering in the woods like I wasn´t supposed to and wound up right in the middle of the battle. And that´s what I suppose saved me.When I got back home the main house was burning to the ground. I saw two men wearin´ bits and pieces of ´Federate and Yank uniforms. They killed Poppa right off, and Mother they dragged into the front yard before they killed her too. I reckon that was the day I first got the knack of being invisible. The spirit dog seen me right off, though. He was big and black and smelled like burning. His eyes were like red coals and everywhere he went, it seemed death followed. Him and me, we mostly traveled together after that. I passed through midnight fields of dead and dying soldiers, reeking makeshift field hospitals worse than hell itself; climbed into the mountains where the runaway slaves hid; and walked through towns shattered by the passage of the war. I met a lot of people, some of them living and some of them just memories. There was Jimmadasin, the slave who died on my account, and Mammy Jack, who taught me to see visions; the gallant Colonel Ashby, who let me ride by his side, and, of course, the mulatto whore Lucy, who saved my life twice. Last but not least, there was mad but brilliant General Jackson, who was probably responsible for putting more men in their graves than any other during the Shenandoah campaign. Whether he was a... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Christopher Kipiniak. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/013195/bk_adbl_013195_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
You will love this course. Expertly and faithfully taught, this special 12-lecture series promises numerous ´´aha!´´ moments. You will learn, laugh, and grow as you enjoy this amazing set of talks in your car or at home. The Scriptures can be the inspired word of God and a puzzle all at the same time. Even for Christians, questions arise about appropriate roles of women as described in the Bible - for example, ´´Wives be subordinate to your husbands´´ (Col 3:18) and ´´women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not allowed to speak´´ (1 Cor 14:34). Commands such as ´´slaves, be obedient to your human masters´´ (Eph 6:5) or ´´call no one on earth your father´´ (Matt 23:9) can be challenging. Other perplexing passages appear to portray Jesus in a negative light, for instance in Mark 7:27, when Jesus calls the Syrophoenician woman a dog or when God kills most of humanity in a flood (Gen 6-8). Some passages elude our understanding because of factors such as the ancient culture of the author, the inexactness of a translation, and centuries of creative interpretation, often from outside the church. Using modern methods, and approaching these sometimes confounding texts forthrightly as both a Scripture scholar and a person of faith, Fr. Patrick Mullen will pull back some of the fog of centuries, culture, language, and translation to reveal the often hidden but still discernable sense of the enduring word of God. This course will enable you to experience your bible with newfound joy and understanding. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Rev. J. Patrick Mullen STL PhD. A wizard and a computer programmer from opposite sides of an interdimensional portal must work together to save their worlds from destruction.... In a world where wizards are relegated to ghettos, it is no surprise to see one murdered in the street. But for Stonne Caris, a young warrior monk who sees the killing and gives chase to the culprit, there is nothing ordinary about seeing a murderer disappear into a black, inky portal. The Archmage sends him in search of Antryg Windrose - a half-mad mage who understands the nature of these passages between dimensions. On the other side of the Void is Joanna, a programmer as mild as Caris is deadly. She has spent her life in cubicles, staring into computer terminals, as far from heroism as she can get. But when the power that is crossing between dimensions draws her through the Void, she finds herself battling to save a world she never even knew existed. 1. Language: English. A seasoned woman is spicy. She has been marinated in life experience. She can be alternately sweet, tart, bubbly, or mellow. She can be maternal and playful, bossy and submissive, strong and soft. The seasoned woman knows who she is. She could be any one of us, as long as she is committed to living fully and passionately in the second half of life. In her most groundbreaking work since Passages and The Silent Passage, best-selling author Gail Sheehy reveals a hidden cultural phenomenon: increased vitality in women´s sex and love lives after 50. The ´Piano Quintet in C´ is a substantial and superbly written work lasting some 30 minutes. The first movement, marked Allegro con fuoco, is expansive, loquacious and filled with late romantic passion, its harmonies Brahmsian for the most part but tinged with modality in the quieter passages. The expressive romantic melody of the Andante second movement is fully characteristic of the composer and resembles the song Silent Noon that he composed in the same year. The finale is a set of five well-differentiated variations, ending with a beautiful bell-like coda. This work was written in 1903.
