Shot in 1938 Too Much Johnson was Welles’ first feature, the film that helped him hone his craft and led him to create to the masterpiece that is Citizen Kane. The footage was presumed destroyed in a fire in Welles’ home in 1971 but was recently rediscovered in Italy and the restored 66 mins version makes its UK DVD debut. Too Much Johnson is an elaborate 1890s farce of mistaken identity. Billings flees by ship to Cuba, where now also hiding from his own wife (Ruth Ford) and mother-in-law (Mary), he adopts the identity of a plantation owner named Johnson, who is expecting a mail-order bride. Orson Welles plays a Keystone Kop. Cast and Crew: Orson Welles / Virginia Nicholson / Edgar Barrier / Joseph Cotton / Arlene Francis / Ruth Ford. Directed by Orson Welles. Awards and Reviews: National Society of Film Critics Awards, USA 2014 – Archival Award ‘A gleeful experiment in silent cinema pastiche’ - The Guardian / ‘An unanticipated delight’ - Variety / ‘The film is far more than a curiosity; it’s a major rediscovery, one that deeply traces the roots of Welles’s art, both stylistically and thematically’ The New Yorker

Birth of a Nation - Centenary Edition

zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

2015 marks the centenary of the release of the controversial, yet extremely significant American silent epic, The Birth of a Nation, by D.W. Griffith. Griffith is often considered to be one of the most important figures in the history of cinema having been credited with creating and perfecting cinematic devices such as the flash-back, the iris shot, the mask and cross-cutting. The Birth of a Nation covers a period of several years and is centered on the relationship of two families during the Civil War and Reconstruction-US era. Dividing friends and destroying families, The Civil War is minor in its disruption compared to the anarchy which follows in the black-ruled South post-war. The film was released to great commercial success, being one of the highest grossing films of the Silent era, but was widely-debated and often condemned due to its portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan as a heroic force. The film is attributed to launching the career of Lillian Gish, who worked closely with Griffith for many years, and who was also known as ‘The First Lady of American Cinema’. Extras: Two short films by D W Griffith; The Rose of Kentucky (1911) and The Coward (1911) The Drummer of the 8th (1913) – short film starring future Oscar winning Frank Borzage (A Farewell to Arms) Stolen Glory (1912) – a comedy starring Ford Sterling filmed against the backdrop of a parade of Union Civil War veterans 1930 re-release title sequence and short archival introduction by D W Griffith Photoplay orchestral recording sessions Out-takes and original camera tests D W Griffith on Lux Radio Theatre BFI Southbank roundtable discussion (2015) A Personal Appreciation of Birth of a Nation by film scholar Melvyn Stokes Fully illustrated booklet with news essays and full credits Cast and Crew: Directed by D W Griffith (Intolerance, Orphans of the Storm) Cast: Lillian Gish (Duel in the Sun, The Comedians)

Mind to Mind: Ashton Ford #3 , Hörbuch, Digital...

Ashton Ford has been a spy, a naval officer, a scholar and an adventurer. His knowledge of cryptology and philosophy is exceeded only by his capability with a handgun. But, the best thing about Ashton Ford is hardly so conventional...he has powers. Sometimes, he can see the future. He uses these powers to either make people's lives a lot easier - or a whole lot harder. Ashton Ford is intrigued by a case involving a beautiful silent "Jane Doe" who has been sadistically brutalized. The mute and mysterious woman has no idea who she is, why someone wants her dead, or why the entire left hemisphere of her brain has been surgically removed. There are no handles to the case, except a few satanic symbols, and it is quickly turning into one of the toughest cases Ford has ever attempted. In a race against time, he must reach this woman's silent mind before the evils of a deadly sex cult destroy them both. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gene Engene. Spooked: How the CIA Manipulates the Media and ...
9,95 € *

The American people depend on a free press to keep a close and impartial watch on the national security operations that are carried out in our name. But in many cases, this trust is sadly misplaced, as leading journalists are seduced and manipulated by the secretive agencies they cover. While the press remains silent about its corrupting relationship with the intelligence community - a relationship that dates back to the Cold War - Spooking the News will blow the lid off this unseemly arrangement. Schou will name names and shine a spotlight on flagrant examples of collusion, when respected reporters have crossed the line and sold out to powerful agencies. The book will also document how the CIA has embedded itself in "liberal" Hollywood to ensure that its fictional spies get the hero treatment on screen. Among the revelations in Spooking the News: The CIA created a special public affairs unit to influence the production of Hollywood films and TV shows, allowing celebrities involved in pro-CIA projects - including Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck - unique access inside the agency's headquarters. The CIA vets articles on controversial topics like the drone assassination program and grants friendly reporters background briefings on classified material, while simultaneously prosecuting ex-officers who spill the beans on damaging information. 1. Speak up for yourself - we want to know what you have to say. From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless, outcast, because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. As time passes, she becomes increasingly isolated and practically stops talking altogether. Only her art class offers any solace, and it is through her work on an art project that she is finally able to face what really happened at that terrible party: She was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her. Her healing process has just begun when she has another violent encounter with him. But this time Melinda fights back, refuses to be silent, and thereby achieves a measure of vindication. A timeless novel about consent and finding the courage to speak up for yourself, the 20th anniversary edition of the classic novel that has spoken to so many young adults now includes a new introduction written and read by acclaimed writer, host, speaker, and cultural commentator Ashley C. Ford as well as an afterword written and read by New York Times best-selling author of All American Boys and Long Way Down Jason Reynolds. This edition also features an updated Q&A, resource list, and essay and poem written and read by Laurie Halse Anderson.Praise for Speak:“In a stunning first novel, Anderson uses keen observations and vivid imagery to pull readers into the head of an isolated teenager.... Will leave readers touched and inspired.” (Publishers Weekly)“An uncannily funny book even as it plumbs the darkness, Speak will hold readers from first word to last.” (The Horn Book, starred review)Accolades for Speak:New York Times Best SellerPublishers Weekly/i 1.
