An argument for simplicity from the best-selling authors of Profit from the Core. Is radical reinvention the key to winning in today’s fast-paced world? Not judging by the results of some of the world’s best-performing companies. In Repeatability, Chris Zook and James Allen - leaders of Bain & Company’s influential Strategy practice - warn that complexity is a silent killer of profitable growth. Successful companies endure by maintaining simplicity at their core. They don’t stray from, or regularly discard, their business model in pursuit of radical renovation. Instead, they build a ´´repeatable business model” that produces continuous improvement and allows them to rapidly adapt to change without succumbing to complexity. Based on a multiyear study of more than 200 companies, the book stresses the value of repeatability in business, showing how the ´´big idea” today is really made up of a series of successful smaller ideas driven by a simple and repeatable business model. Zook and Allen show how some of the world’s best-known firms combine a core differentiation model with speed, adaptability, and simplicity to land them at the top for long periods of time. These firms include: Apple, Danaher, DaVita, IKEA, Nike, Olam, Tetra Pak, Vanguard, and others. CEOs, senior executives, managers, and investors all need this book. It’s the new blueprint for reaching the top - and staying there. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Erik Synnestvedt. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/gdan/000743/bk_gdan_000743_sample.mp3. Two thrilling Western stories set in Arizona, in which strong and silent cowboys use their wits to overcome bullies while avoiding gunplay as much as possible. The first story, ´´Scalisi Claws Leather´´, is set in Arizona during the Prohibition era. The notorious Chicago gangster Pete Scalisi has come to the Bar BQ dude ranch to hide out for a while. He has only contempt for the hicks he encounters at the Bar BQ, but waitress Rose Dunn and top cowhand Jim Falconer show him a thing or two. Scalisi has some lessons to learn about Westerners, and he will have to learn them the hard way. In the title story, ´´Long Texan´´, Boone Sibley arrives in Tough Nut, Arizona, just in time to save a small child that wanders into the line of fire in a shootout. But instead of getting a hero´s welcome, saving the kid puts Sibley on the wrong side of Whip Quinn and his gang, who are used to doing as they please with no one standing against them. Quinn suggests that Tucson would be a better place for Sibley. But Sibley embodies the code of the West, and says he likes the climate and the people in Tough Nut, and that´s where he plans to stay. But if that´s what he wants, he has to first deal with Quinn framing him for stage robbery and murder. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Chris Abell. A selection of letters written home by a private soldier who served in Iraq, Palestine and other parts of the Middle East during the Second World War. Anthony Rawson was born in October 1919 and grew up in the family home in Watford. When war broke out in 1939 he was working as a gas fitter for the Watford and St. Albans Gas Company. He joined the army in June 1940 but because of his poor eyesight he was not classed as a combatant. Instead he became a fitter, later a vehicle mechanic in what was then the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and spent the next 5 years in the Middle East. From the various bases where he was stationed in Iraq, Persia, Syria, Lebanon and finally Palestine, Tony Rawson wrote home, virtually every week, to his mother in Watford about the army, the war, the people he met, the things he did, his hopes and ambitions for his post-war life. This audio book is a selection of those letters. Paul Panting has featured in many BBC Radio Drama plays and has recorded Daniel Tammet’s Born on a Blue Day for Book of the Week.
